Bridge construction will reduce Giant City Road to one lane at the Drury Creek bridge located ½ mile south of E. Pleasant Hill Road.  Traffic at the construction site will be controlled by electronic signals.  With the anticipated heavy traffic in this area during the eclipse weekend, Giant City Road will experience extreme congestion.  Motorists are urged to find alternate routes between Carbondale and Giant City State Park.  Suggested routes are south on U.S. 51 to  S. Illinois Ave then east on Boskydell Road to Giant City Road or New Route 13 east of Carbondale to Spillway Road then south on  Grassy Road to Giant City Road.  Both suggested routes will avoid the congestion created by the bridge construction over Drury Creek.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - August 8, 2017

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office is continuing to prepare for the expected influx of visitors to the County during the 2017 Eclipse.  As part of these preparations, the Sheriff’s Office is providing the public with two informational telephone numbers where residents and visitors can call for Eclipse information.  The Sheriff’s Office understands that law enforcement is often where the public turns first when seeking information.  With the addition of these telephone lines and dedicated staff to answer the calls, the emergency lines can be left open for critical emergency communications.

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office Eclipse Information telephone numbers are:

618-687-4403 and 618-687-4404

The Sheriff’s Office will increase staffing levels beginning Tuesday, August 15th through Tuesday, August 22nd.  Additional patrol deputies, corrections deputies, and telecommunicators will be working throughout the County to ensure the quickest possible response to any situation.

In addition, the Sheriff’s Office will have a Mobile Response Trailer set up on the parking lot of Southern Illinois Healthcare’s training facility located at New Rte. 13 and Reed Station Road, east of Carbondale. The trailer will be staffed throughout the Eclipse weekend and the public is encouraged to visit the trailer if they are in need of assistance.  A limited number of free eclipse viewing glasses will be available at the trailer.

The Sheriff’s Office is anticipating extreme traffic congestion throughout the County.  Road Construction projects on Giant City Road at Drury Creek and bridge repairs at Old Hwy. 13 in Murphysboro, and U.S. 51 South of Dowell are expected to create even more congestion.  Local residents are encouraged to use alternate routes to avoid these areas.

The Sheriff’s Office wants everyone to have a good time while experiencing the Eclipse event.  It is the Sheriff’s Office goal to provide a safe environment for all residents and visitors.
