Jackson County, IL- The Illinois Air National Guard airlifted sandbags to Murphysboro’s wastewater treatment plant to avoid inundation of electrical systems and loss of the plant. The plant serves the entire city of Murphysboro.  A National Guard Strike Team assisted with this sandbagging operation which was completed earlier today.

Jackson County Officials wish to thank the many volunteers who have assisted in the response.  Volunteers have been a critical part of Jackson County’s success in fighting back the flood waters.  Calls have been coming into the Emergency Operations Center from many persons to volunteer with sandbagging efforts, or to offer the use of trucks or boats.

Jackson County Officials are reminding residents the Big Muddy river is closed to pleasure boat traffic from Rend Lake to the Mississippi river by order of the Director of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.  The Sheriff's Office and the IDNR continue to receive complaints of boats traveling the Big Muddy river creating damaging wake.  The presence of this wake is damaging fragile sand bagged structures.  The Sheriff's Office and IDNR will be patrolling the river.  Individuals violating the ban will be fined.  Those individuals using the river to evacuate are permitted on the river, however a strict NO WAKE must be followed.

The Sheriff's Office continues to respond to reports of motorists driving around road-closed signs and becoming stranded in floodwaters.  The roads that are closed have been deemed unsafe for passage by authorities. Attempting to drive through floodwaters is both extremely dangerous and illegal.  Sheriff’s Deputies will cite motorist caught driving beyond barricades.

When flooding occurs in your area, follow these safety rules:

·    Flooded roads could have significant damage hidden by floodwaters. NEVER drive through floodwaters or on flooded roads. Do NOT attempt to go through or around the road barricades.
·     “Turn around… don’t drown!” If your vehicle stalls, leave it immediately and seek higher ground. Water only two feet deep can float away most automobiles.
·    Because pooled water and changes in road conditions can require a smooth and timely reduction in speed, cruise control should not be used on wet roads.  While stability control may help recovery from a skid when a vehicle slows enough to regain traction, it cannot prevent hydroplaning.
·    Stay away from flood-prone areas, including dips, low spots, valleys, and ditches.
·    Avoid flooded areas or those with rapid water flow. Do not attempt to cross a flowing stream. It takes only six inches of fast flowing water to sweep you off your feet.
·    Don’t allow children to play near high water, storm drains or ditches. Hidden dangers could lie beneath the water and water is often contaminated with sewage.
·    Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize flood dangers.
·    Monitor NOAA Weather Radio or your local media for vital weather related information.
·    If the flood waters are encroaching on your property in Jackson County and you need sandbags, call the Emergency Operations Center at 684-3137.

When you are preparing for evacuation, please do not leave your pets behind.  “All pets are a comfort in a turbulent situation,” said Lloyd Nelson, Jackson County Animal Control Officer, “however should we reach a critical situation, we don’t want to endanger emergency personnel to attempt rescues with pets.” If you are going to a shelter and cannot bring your pet with you follow the course of action:
1-    Call a friend on higher ground
2-    Place your pet with your personal veterinarian
3-    If an absolute emergency, call Jackson County Animal Control at 618-687-7235

When you evacuate, please leave your property as soon as possible with essential items such as medication, medical records, oxygen, pets and pet food, and other such items to last you and your family several days.  Before you leave, turn off power to your home and other utilities, if possible.  If you are not impacted but know someone living in this impacted area, please alert them of this advisory.  Residents should be alert and mindful of rising waters.  Be aware that floodwaters may contain biological or chemical contaminants, so please limit exposure to floodwaters and practice good personal hygiene.

As of 8:25 AM on April 30, 2011

It is advised to take precautions to prepare for the floods. If flooding occurs in your area follow these safety rules:

Jackson County will provide assistance for sheltering and transportation needs.  For more information call the Jackson County Emergency Management Agency at 684-3137.

Jackson County, IL- ATTENTION RESTRICTED ACCESS for BIG MUDDY.

Big Muddy river traffic is officially closed from Rend Lake to the Mississippi River. The Big Muddy levee access road has also been closed to the public.

“We have a lot of volunteers, we are barely staying above water, but things are changing by the moment,” said Mike Ellet, Mayor of Grand Tower.  Luckily, they have a lot of volunteers, and are very busy sand bagging; but are in desperate need of pumps, which have been requested from the State. The levy has not been breached but a drain- pipe that had previously failed is still allowing the flow of water.  They are trying to control the fresh water flow with pumps, but need larger pumps as soon as possible.

Residents are asked to voluntarily relocate until re-entry is deemed safe. Voluntary evacuation is recommended to best protect the safety of those in the impacted areas as well as emergency responders.

Mayor Mike Ellet, mayor of Grand Tower, is strongly advising residents of Grand Tower to voluntarily evacuate due to current flood conditions.  The levy has not been breached but a drain- pipe that had previously failed and been repaired on Sunday has again been compromised.  Residents are asked to voluntarily relocate until re-entry is deemed safe. Voluntary evacuation is recommended to best protect the safety of those in the impacted areas as well as emergency responders.

When you evacuate, please leave your property as soon as possible with essential items such as medication, medical records, oxygen, pets and pet food, and other such items to last you and your family several days.  Before you leave turn off power to your home and other utilities, if possible.  If you are not impacted but know someone living in this impacted area, please alert them of this advisory.  Residents should be alert and mindful of rising waters.  Be aware that floodwaters may contain biological or chemical contaminants, so please limit exposure to floodwaters and practice good personal hygiene.

Jackson County will provide assistance for sheltering and transportation needs.  For more information call the Jackson County Emergency Management Agency at 684-3137.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:     April 27, 2011 at 11 a.m.

(Jackson County, Illinois) Current sandbagging operations have been completed in Elkville and volunteers are no longer needed at this time.

Jackson County continues under a disaster proclamation due to flooding conditions. Most area rivers are already experiencing flooding and rivers flooding will only worsen with the additional heavy rainfall. Officials are monitoring the situation and continue to prepare for potential threats to county residents. Flooding is expected to occur in areas that have never received flooding before. It is advised to take precautions and prepare before the floods happen. If flooding occurs it is advisable to avoid contact with flood waters and follow these safety rules:

·    Stay away from flood-prone areas, including dips, low spots, valleys, and ditches
·    Flooded roads could have significant damage hidden by floodwaters. NEVER drive through floodwaters or on flooded roads. The National Weather Service now warns anyone who comes to a flooded roadway, “Turn around… don’t drown!” If your vehicle stalls, leave it immediately and seek higher ground. Water only two feet deep can float away most automobiles.
·    Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize flood dangers.
·    Monitor NOAA Weather Radio or your local media for vital weather related information.

If you do have contact with flood water, practice good personal hygiene.  If open sores or wound become exposed to flood water, disinfect the area with soap and clean water to control infection.  Ingesting anything contaminated with flood water can cause disease.  Individuals who sustain an injury that has been exposed to flood water are advised to receive a tetanus shot within 48 hours.

Other information on flood-related public health issues is available on the Illinois Department of Public Health web-site at http://www.idph.state.il.us/floodinfo/ .
